 Dear Harry:

As you have asked, I will outline the Summer Motorcycle Trip, which Phyllis and I took just recently. We shipped the Harley Davidson motorcycle, that we have named FRED, along with five other bikes of friends, to Portland, Maine and we arrived by air on Aug 6.

 Our trip really started the next day with a ride along a coastal road to Bar Harbor, about 200 miles. We spent the next two days exploring the coastal area and Acadia National Park, which was just beautiful. The views from atop Cadillac Mountain were spectacular. This was the height of their season, so it was very crowded but bearable.

 On Aug. 10 we left Bar Harbor aboard THE CAT, A 300™ High Speed Ferry, to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. The 150 mile long trip took 2 hrs. 45 mins. From Yarmouth, we rode along the coast to a very quaint town by the name of Lunenberg and spent the night. This town had a very European flair to it and was very enjoyable. We continued North thru Antigonish and connected to the Cabot Trail, which took us along the coast and the very northern tip of Nova Scotia. It was quite mountainous, going from approximately 1800 ft down to the Ocean. The road was notched into the side of the mountains, with no guard rails - pretty exciting! It was on to Peggy’s Cove and Cheticamp. The roads were not in good repair and poor Fred was really taking a good pounding. Hitting one pothole at a pretty good speed caused the metal frame on the tour pack to break in half. For those of you that do not know what a tour pack is, it is like a large fiberglass suite case that is attached to the rear of the motorcycle, but also acts as the backrest for the passenger. Needless to say, Phyllis was not a happy camper. We put a band-aid on bungee cords and tie down straps, it was not pretty, but it got us going again. That night we considered terminating our trip, because of the broken frame, but when we looked at the map, we realized that we were 1200 miles from Portland, Maine (where the trucks were that shipped the bikes). The next day we took it kind of slow and spent the night in a lovely town by the name of Pictou.

 The next day, it was back onto another Ferry to Prince Edward Island and it was there that we decided to leave the group and try and fix FRED. The Harley shop in Charlottetown PET was very small and stocked almost no parts, however after several phone calls, they said they could have the parts flown in the next day and start the repairs. Being the hard core bikers that we are, we said yes and proceeded to rent an air-conditioned car to continue touring the local area. I didn’t mention before, that they were having a real heat wave in the area and the temp. Was in the mid to high 90’s every day. That night we said good-bye to our friends, since they were going to continue with the trip and we did not know if the parts would make it in the next day or when they would actually complete the repair. Around 11:00 am, the Harley shop called and said the parts came in but the one mechanic was tied up and did not know when he could get to it. Well, we turned the rental car in and decided to sit in the store until they fixed FRED. We also told them that we had given up the Hotel room, so if they didn’t get us fixed, we would be spending the night with them. At 6:00 pm they hadn’t completed the repair, but had us to the point that we could continue the trip.

 As we rode off into the sunset, we were determined to try and meet up with our group, who had gone to the Bay of Fundy. After 300 miles and a lot of bugs, we pulled into the town of Sussex, New Brunswick to get gas and ran into the group coming back from dinner. What are the chances of that happening again?

 The next day we went on thru New Brunswick (which is very green and pretty) to Cambeilton, which is on the border with Quebec Province. The next morning we crossed the bridge over to the Gaspe Peninsula and rode along the coast through small French fishing villages and picturesque towns, each with white churches and large steeples, so pristine! We rode onto the town of Perce and it was the highlight of our trip. Perce is a small French town, located on the Atlantic Ocean, looking at the Saint Lawrence Seaway and over looking the most breathtaking view of THE PERCE ROCK. It difficult for me to explain the beauty of this rock formation and would suggest you look it up on the Internet. A picture is worth a thousand words, sort of thing. We would have enjoyed spending more time in PERCE and plan on coming back someday. The following day we actually started back to our point of origin, via Matane, Gaspe, Que ‘ Woodstock, New Brunswick and finally Portland, Maine. The last night of this wonderful THIRTY TWO HUINDRED MILE TRIP, was spent in a wonderful seafood restaurant, in Portland’s Harbor District, with our friends and already planning our trip for next year.
